Medical Director Profile

G.Gbaanador, MD, FACS, FICS was born in Nweol, Gokana and completed his secondary education at St Pius X College in Bodo, Gokana followed by Advance Level studies at Rivers State College of Science & Technology, Port Harcourt, Nigeria before proceeding to the United States of America for further education. There he obtained a Bachelor of Science from Angelo State University before entering medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1981. He completed his general surgery residency at Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine and Traumatology at Maryland Institute of Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) of the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine, in Baltimore, Maryland.

He then joined the Department of Surgery faculty at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas as assistant professor of surgery and subsequently transferred to the Department of Surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC-Houston) at the Texas Medical Center. He became board certified in general surgery and Critical Care Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeon and Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.

He has served in many capacities including Medical Director of Life Flight at UTMB, Deputy Chief of Surgery at Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital of the Harris Health System, Houston (an affiliate hospital of the UTHSC-Houston Medical School), Trauma Director at Bayou City Medical Center in Houston, and Emergency Department Director at Bethania Regional Medical Center in Wichita Falls, Texas.

He later left full-time academic surgery to establish Medi-Surg Clinics in Houston, Texas. Private practice afforded him the flexibility to commit more time to his passion for humanitarian service and rendering free healthcare services to the under-privilege peoples of Africa and the Caribbean.

He has always planned to return to Nigeria and use his talent as a healthcare professional to serve his people but surveying the healthcare landscape of Nigeria at the time, he found two major challenges.

A paucity of healthcare facilities with adequately trained professionals and a general lack of modern medical equipment in practice. These challenges fueled his determination and passion to become an instrument of change in the healthcare sector paradigm in Nigeria. Undaunted by the prevailing wind of insecurity in the Niger Delta he returned to Nigeria and served briefly as the Chief Medical Director and Chief Executive Officer of Shawsand Medical Centre in Port Harcourt while struggling to build a reputable modern healthcare facility of international standards, close to home. That dream, undaunted by challenges and driven by passionate faith became a reality manifested as BARIEL Medical Center!

This journey is just beginning and we invite you to join us in this adventure of faith and celebration of what God can do by visiting BARIEL Medical Center so that we can serve your healthcare need thereby sharing with you our core believe that with God nothing is impossible at BARIEL Medical Center.
